Ricky Martin Brings Down the House with “Livin’ La Vida Loca” Before Accepting Latin Icon Award at 2025 MTV VMAs

The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards turned into a celebration of Latin music history on Sunday night in New York, as Ricky Martin delivered a powerhouse performance before accepting the first-ever Latin Icon Award.

A Performance to Remember

Introduced by fellow Latin superstar J Balvin, Martin kicked off his set with the global smash Livin’ La Vida Loca before diving into a medley of hits that had the crowd on their feet. The Puerto Rican legend took his performance into the audience, blending stage charisma with pure energy. “Ricky Martin didn’t just set the stage for the Latin music takeover; he had to build it from the ground up in a time where Latin music was almost never played on mainstream radio,” Balvin said. “He broke barriers with massive hit songs and an unmistakable sound, inspiring me and so many Latino performers.”

Honored for a Four-Decade Legacy

Following his performance, Martin received the Latin Icon Award from Jessica Simpson, who recalled opening for him on his Livin’ La Vida Loca tour in 1999 and 2000. The award recognized Martin’s 40-year career that propelled Latin music and culture into the mainstream. With over 70 million albums sold worldwide, countless awards, and humanitarian achievements, Martin’s influence goes far beyond the charts.

“We Just Want to Break Boundaries”

In his acceptance speech, Martin thanked fans across the globe: “This is for you all. Thank you so much for your applause. I am addicted to your applause. That’s why I keep coming back.” He added, “It’s been 40 years — I started when I was a baby and we’re still here. We just want to unite countries. We just want to break boundaries and we just want to keep music alive.”
