Automated Industrial Robotics Is Taking an Engineering-First Approach to a Longer View on American Manufacturing

Industrial automation is a sector that produces a great deal of noise about transformation and rather less clarity about what successful transformation actually requires. The technology narrative is compelling and, to a meaningful extent, accurate. Advances in machine vision, systems integration, and adaptive process control have expanded what automation can reliably do in complex production environments. What the technology narrative tends to understate is the organizational challenge: building and sustaining the kind of engineering capability that allows those advances to be deployed well, consistently, and in environments where the consequences of underperformance are significant.

Automated Industrial Robotics (AIR) was founded in 2023 with a deliberate focus on that organizational challenge. Brian Klos, Executive Chairman, and Darragh de Stonndun, CEO, built the company around a view that the automation firms best positioned to serve demanding manufacturing environments over the long term are those that have done the harder work of assembling genuinely integrated engineering expertise, not those that have accumulated the largest portfolio of deployments or the most prominent market positioning.

Pharmaceutical production, precision assembly, and complex systems integration are environments where the tolerance for error is extremely low and where the relationship between an automation provider and a facility operator needs to extend well past the point of system commissioning. AIR's collaborative engineering approach is structured around that reality: the company provides an engineering-led deployment methodology and ongoing support and optimization services that treat the post-installation period as an active and consequential phase of every engagement.

The company has grown through a combination of internal development and acquisitions, selecting partner organizations based on how their people actually operate before evaluating any other factor. Whether they bring genuine collaborative orientation to engineering problems. Whether they treat collective accountability as a real operating principle rather than a stated value. Whether their relationship with customers is built around long-term outcomes rather than project completion. Companies that meet those standards are integrated into the AIR network. AIR has integrated multiple companies while maintaining strong team continuity, and that continuity reflects the quality of the selection process rather than any conventional retention strategy.

The engineering expertise that results is shared deliberately across the organization. Knowledge developed in one production environment is applied to challenges in others. Darragh de Stonndun has described this as one of the most consequential structural decisions AIR made early: to build a network in which expertise compounds across the whole rather than accumulates within parts. AIR's systems are designed to improve accuracy over time, and the organization supporting those systems is designed to improve in the same way.

AIR invests deliberately in the people who build its capability, which shapes how the company retains the experienced engineers and technicians whose knowledge defines what it can offer. Brian Klos has noted that in a sector where the competition for experienced technical talent is genuine and ongoing, the organizations that treat their people as the primary strategic asset tend to build something that holds together through cycles when others do not.
