Michele Kanan Is Redefining Success on Her Own Terms in Hollywood
Written by Nia Bowers
For Emmy-winning producer, writer, and director Michele Kanan, LA is more than just a place to live and work, it's a neighborhood that inspires creativity, connection, and a little indulgence.
While Kanan is known in Hollywood for creating emotionally driven stories and championing authentic female voices, off set she enjoys some of the simple pleasures that make WeHo one of Los Angeles' most beloved communities.
“I love hanging out in West Hollywood,” Kanan says. “There’s always something happening, but it still feels personal.”
One of her favorite local stops is Ecco un Poco on Third Street, where she regularly satisfies her sweet tooth.
“They have amazing gelato and gluten-free cannolis,” she says. “It’s one of my favorite places to meet friends or just treat myself after a busy day.”
Another must-visit spot on her list is Fōnuts, a local favorite known for its baked donuts and gluten-free options.
“Fōnuts has the most incredible gluten-free donuts,” Kanan says. “If you know, you know.”
For Kanan, the ideal Los Angeles afternoon combines entertainment, wellness, and a little walking.
“I love seeing a movie at The Grove and then walking over to Erewhon for a smoothie afterward,” she says. “That’s probably my perfect day.”
It’s a balance that reflects the way she approaches life overall. Despite a demanding career in entertainment, Kanan believes in creating space for both creativity and everyday moments.
As an Emmy-winning storyteller, she has built a reputation for projects that focus on emotional honesty, resilience, and human connection. Whether producing, writing, or directing, she gravitates toward stories that feel authentic and relatable.
“I think audiences connect with stories that feel real,” she says. “People want characters they can recognize in themselves.”
That commitment to meaningful storytelling has helped shape an impressive career. Together with her husband, actor, producer, and author Sean Kanan, she co-founded Flip Creative Media, a production company focused on creating compelling film and television projects that prioritize substance alongside entertainment.
The creative partnership has allowed the couple to collaborate on projects while supporting one another professionally and personally.
“We genuinely champion each other,” Kanan says. “Having that support system makes all the difference.”
Professionally, Kanan continues to expand her creative footprint. She is currently attached to direct Final Judgment and is also developing The Snipers We Couldn't See, a deeply personal drama exploring the impact of schizophrenia on families across generations.
Both projects represent the kind of storytelling she is most passionate about today, stories that combine cinematic scope with emotional truth.
Yet no matter how busy her schedule becomes, Kanan appreciates the moments that bring her back to the community she loves.
Whether she’s enjoying a gluten-free cannoli on Third Street, catching the latest film at The Grove, or developing her next project, she remains deeply connected to the lifestyle that makes West Hollywood unique.
For Kanan, the best stories begin with authentic experiences, and fortunately, she’s found plenty of inspiration right here in WeHo.
