Ezra Miller Breaks Silence, Says Return to Hollywood Is ‘Tentative’ After Cannes and Filming Italy Festival

Ezra Miller Says Hollywood Comeback Is on "Tentative" Ground After Surprise Festival Appearances
After years out of the spotlight, Ezra Miller is finally speaking out—and suggesting that a cautious return to Hollywood could be underway. The 32-year-old actor, who stepped back from the public eye following multiple controversies, made back-to-back red carpet appearances at Cannes Film Festival and the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival—signaling a possible new chapter.During an interview with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale at the Sardinia-based film event on June 19, Miller opened up about their current connection to the film industry. When asked whether they’re truly returning to Hollywood, Miller didn’t mince words: “Tentative, I’d say. On tentative grounds.”
Support for Lynne Ramsay Sparks Re-Entry
Miller’s first major public appearance in years came last month at Cannes, which they said was at the request of longtime friend and filmmaker Lynne Ramsay.“I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world,” Miller said. “If there's anything I really still believe in, it's devotion to one’s people... to one’s friends.”
The two first worked together on 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, a dark psychological thriller that catapulted both into critical acclaim. Ramsay’s latest film, Die My Love, premiered at Cannes this year—and Miller confirmed they are actively collaborating on a new film they’re co-writing together.
“That will likely be the first thing I do,” Miller said. “I’ve been writing a lot—because you can do that in solitude, which has been friendly to me.”
Cannes Was a Difficult Return
Despite appearing poised on the red carpet, Miller admitted that returning to the public eye wasn’t easy. “I didn’t necessarily want to go to Cannes,” they said. “It was a tough re-entry point. If you’ve been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes.”The Flash and Perks of Being a Wallflower star described the environment as “not an easy re-entry,” but reaffirmed their loyalty to Ramsay: “I would do anything for Lynne.”
Reflections on Mistakes and Lessons Learned
In the same conversation, Miller expressed a deep sense of remorse and reflection. “I hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things I did, and for a lot of things that happened in that time,” they said. The actor also acknowledged learning tough lessons about trust in the industry. “When you work in this industry, you’ll find yourself in deep relation with people who do not give a single f--- about you or your well-being at all,” Miller stated bluntly.
Yet, they say the experience helped clarify who their real allies are: “I'm really, really grateful to learn who’s not that—and who actually is.”
What Comes Next?
While no formal acting projects have been announced beyond their collaboration with Ramsay, Miller’s recent public appearances—and candid reflections—suggest that they are laying careful groundwork for a return, on their own terms.Whether that includes more mainstream Hollywood work or art-house projects, Miller seems focused on creative work grounded in loyalty, truth, and personal healing.
