A two-decade journey to the screen
After more than 20 years in development, Honeymoon with Harry is finally moving forward with Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal set to star. The dramedy has been a coveted Hollywood project since the early 2000s, and now Amazon MGM has secured the rights to bring it to life.
The creative team behind the film
The film will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the duo behind Crazy, Stupid, Love. The script comes from Dan Fogelman, who previously collaborated with Ficarra and Requa on both Crazy, Stupid, Love and Hulu’s Paradise. Together, the trio brings a proven track record of blending heartfelt comedy with emotional depth.
A bittersweet story
Based on an unpublished novel by Bart Baker, the story follows a grieving man (played by Gyllenhaal) who embarks on a honeymoon trip with his would-be father-in-law (Costner) after his fiancée dies just two days before their wedding. The unlikely pairing sets the stage for a poignant and emotionally charged journey of loss, connection, and healing.
A history of Hollywood interest
The project has drawn A-list attention since its early days. Originally set up at New Line Cinema in 2004, it saw numerous rewrites and high-profile attachments, including drafts by Paul Haggis (Crash), Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married), and even casting discussions involving Vince Vaughn, Jack Nicholson, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro. Directors like Jonathan Demme and Nick Cassavetes also circled the project over the years.
Producers and debut milestones
Fogelman is producing alongside Mike Karz of Gulfstream Pictures. Notably, Jennifer Salke, former head of Amazon MGM, will also produce the film via her newly launched Sullivan Street Productions, marking her first producing credit since stepping into her new role.
