‘Weapons’ Prequel in Talks as Zach Cregger Juggles Big-Budget Projects
The runaway success of Zach Cregger’s R-rated horror hit Weapons has firmly cemented him as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after filmmakers, with upcoming opportunities ranging from a DC Studios project to his original sci-fi script Flood.
Among the film’s standout characters is Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan — a memorably eerie figure with bright orange hair, smeared lipstick, and oversized glasses. Much like Jordan Peele’s Get Out in 2017, Weapons is drawing awards buzz, with Madigan emerging as a potential contender.

According to industry sources, Warner Bros. and New Line have discussed the possibility of a *Weapons* prequel focused on Aunt Gladys’ origin story. Cregger originally wrote a chapter dedicated to her backstory but cut it for length. The idea now is to expand that “lost chapter” into a full-length film.No official deals have been signed, and no production timeline has been set.
Cregger’s Busy Slate
Part of the delay is due to Cregger’s packed schedule — he’s currently in Prague prepping his big-budget Resident Evil reboot for Columbia Pictures, a project earning him a reported $20 million payday. This will be his third feature as a director, not counting earlier co-directed work such as The Civil War on Drugs (2011) and Miss March (2009).The Resident Evil reboot is set for theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
